Pallet Industry Glossary

A reference for pallet terminology — from GMA spec to ISPM-15 compliance, stringer construction to block pallets. Built by Nevada's pallet authority since 2001.

Overview

If you're new to pallet procurement — or just want a clean reference — this glossary covers the essential terms used in pallet manufacturing, distribution, recycling, and international compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a stringer and a block pallet?
A stringer pallet has long boards (stringers) connecting the top and bottom deck boards — typically 2-way entry for forklifts. A block pallet uses corner and edge blocks, allowing 4-way forklift entry from any side.
Why does ISPM-15 matter?
Most countries require wood pallets used in international shipping to be ISPM-15 compliant — heat-treated and stamped with the IPPC mark. Without it, your shipment can be refused, fumigated at your cost, or quarantined.
