New vs. Used Pallets: Which Is Right for Your Business?

A cost-benefit analysis of new versus used pallets for different business applications and industries.

Buyer's Guide

The Core Tradeoff

New pallets cost more upfront but offer consistent performance, clean appearance, and no prior-use history. Used pallets cost significantly less but vary in condition and may require grading scrutiny. The right choice depends on your application, your industry, and your cost structure.

When to Choose New Pallets

  • Food, pharmaceutical, or other regulated industries with hygiene requirements
  • High-value goods where pallet failure would cause expensive damage
  • Export shipments requiring ISPM-15 compliance (new pallets can be heat-treated)
  • Situations where consistent pallet weight is important for automation systems
  • Customer-facing pallets where appearance matters

When to Choose Used Pallets

  • High-volume distribution where cost per pallet matters more than appearance
  • Internal warehouse use where only structural integrity matters
  • One-way shipments where the pallet won't be reused
  • Construction staging and temporary material storage
  • Any application where Grade B or C performance is sufficient

The Math

If new GMA pallets cost $22 and Grade A used pallets cost $10, you're saving $12 per pallet. At 500 pallets per week, that's $6,000/week or $312,000 per year. For most operations, used Grade A pallets perform identically to new — the savings are significant.
